PARENT EXPECTATIONS
Organized youth soccer has changed dramatically over the past 15 years. The level of competition, time commitment involved, and financial requirements have all increased. With the evolution of paid coaches, coaching directors, and Club management has come increased expectations to win which potentially places additional stress on the children and coaches.
In American culture we place heavy emphasis on winning and we tend to measure success solely by wins and losses. Look no further than our professional sports that not only place the emphasis on winning but on winning championships. Major League Soccer games go to overtime to determine a winner, while in other parts of the world games can end in a tie.
Measuring soccer success can be done many ways: wins / loss record, how many players move on to play collegiate soccer, how many championships are won, how many players reach the state, regional or national team levels, or is the child steadily improving and enjoying the game.
In Blackhills FC we want to win, however, it is most important for our children to improve and enjoy playing the game.
Here are some guidelines for parents to follow so that we can provide the best environment for our children to develop.
The Team: Cheer for them, they are doing their best!
Your Child: Cheer them on and leave the coaching to the coach.
Opponents: Respect the opponent, praise them for a good play and do not taunt them, they are children.
Officials: Speaking to the officials is the job of the captain, coach or coaching director. Understand they will make mistakes and the game and team must move forward.
